Defence
The Defence Section within the British Embassy is responsible for representing the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence within Nepal. Its mission is to help foster relations between the UK Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Defence of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal through achieving mutual understanding and collaboration on defence issues. As such, the Defence Section is responsible for administering the bilateral Defence and Service level relations between the two countries. The Defence Section is headed by an Army Colonel who is the personal representative of the United Kingdom's Chief of Defence Staff. The Defence Section is responsible for providing defence advice to Her Majesty's Ambassador.
A key part of the Defence Section's role is to help administer visits and exchanges between the two nations military.
British Gurkhas Nepal (BGN) is an organisation of the British Army tasked with supporting the 3500 Gurkhas serving in the British Army. Details on Gurkha units in the British Army can be found at British Gurkhas HQ.
Based at 3 sites, in Kathmandu, Pokhara (West Nepal) and Dharan (East Nepal) BGN’s prime roles are:
- The annual recruitment of Gurkhas.
- The transit of individuals and families to and from units.
- Assisting in the welfare of families in Nepal where head of household is abroad.
- Providing assistance to servicemen returning to Nepal on retirement.
- The payment of pensions to ex-servicemen. In addition BGN also runs Nepali language training for British officers joining the
Brigade of Gurkhas and provides limited facilities and equipment to support British Military adventure training expeditions within Nepal.
